The ancient Roman poet Virgil says it best "The greatest Wealth is Health".  How is it that a man born in 70 BC could comprehend this but in 2016 America was ranked one of the unhealthiest countries in the world?  From 2015 to 2016, for the first time in history, Americans spent more money at bars and restaurants ($54.857 billion) than they did on groceries ($52.503 billion). From 2013 through 2014, among 31.5 million insured Americans, the average annual prescription drug cost was $1,370. According to the CDC, 49% of adults 18 years of age and over who met the Physical Activity Guidelines for aerobic physical activity, and 21% of adults 18 years of age and over who met the Physical Activity Guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity.

 

Americans pockets are getting tighter, and it's not due to an increase of money in them. Quite the opposite in fact. Lack of exercise and unhealthy food choices contribute to weight gain and a plethora of ailments, including and not limited to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression. Most conditions get treated with medication, sometimes causing further conditions, which get treated with more medication. This all comes with a cost...your health. I'm not saying to ditch all your medications and doctors orders, but what if there is another way? Studies are now showing that exercise can decrease the amount of medication required for chronic disease, can decrease depression and drop a few pounds in the process. 

 

The American Heart Association suggests at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity) to improve cardiovascular health. Thirty minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. Inactive people can start slow and in small increments. Park the car farther away, use the stairs instead of the elevator, or after dinner plan an nice walk in your neighborhood. If sitting longer than an hour, stand up and do a few stretches or take a little stroll. Make sure to increase the length of time as you feel more comfortable with your activity. It is always advised to speak with your medical doctor before starting any exercise routine, especially if there are any pre-existing conditions.

 

The most common excuse for poor eating habits and not exercising is lack of time. Ironically, time is what you get less of when your health is compromised. I believe exercise is a miracle drug to living a  longer and healthier life.  Don't you think it's time you invest in your health? Remember, "the greatest Wealth is Health"
